Care Guide
Most of what shortens a garment's life happens at home. A few habits will keep your pieces in rotation for years.
Knitwear
Hand wash in cool water with a pH-neutral wool detergent, or dry clean. Never wring — press the water out, reshape flat on a towel, and dry away from direct heat. Fold rather than hang, and de-pill gently with a comb after several wears.
Tailoring & Wool
Dry clean sparingly; over-cleaning flattens the cloth. Brush after each wear with a soft clothes brush, hang on a wide wooden hanger, and rest a jacket or trouser 24 hours between wears so the fibres recover.
Silk & Satin
Dry clean is safest. If washing at home, use cool water and a silk detergent, no soaking. Iron on the lowest setting on the reverse while slightly damp. Keep perfume and deodorant off the fabric — alcohol marks silk permanently.
Leather Goods
Wipe with a dry, soft cloth after use and condition twice a year with a neutral leather cream. Stuff bags lightly and store in the dust bag, upright, out of direct sun. Treat water marks by letting them dry naturally — never with heat.
Footwear
Use cedar shoe trees between wears to hold the shape and absorb moisture. Rotate pairs, polish sparingly, and re-sole rather than replace. Avoid salt, standing water and radiators.
Jewelry
Remove before swimming, bathing, exercise or applying lotion. Polish with a soft dry cloth only — no chemical dips. Store pieces separately so they do not scratch each other.
Fragrance
Store upright in a cool, dark place; heat and sunlight break down a composition faster than anything else. Apply to pulse points and never rub the skin together.
Repairs
We would rather repair a piece than replace it. Email info@shopbutacup.com or call +1 844 300 2882 with photographs and we will advise on a repair or an alteration.
